Free and Safe Learn-To-Read App From Google: Bolo

Bolo is an Android app developed to aid children in Grades 1 to 5 to learn to read confidently – anytime, anywhere, using their own voice

The app works offline and uses speech-based technology to encourage children to read aloud – just the way they naturally do – making it an engaging way to learn to read.

The helpful in-app reading buddy, Diya, also encourages them by providing positive reinforcement when they read correctly and helps out by giving suggestions when they don’t.

How does it work?

Bolo App From Google

Read Words : Children can tap on any word to hear it pronounced. When they practice reading a word, the app will show them if the word was read correctly by making it green.

Understand Words: For non-native speakers of a language, Diya explains the meaning of a word or the sentence in the native language on tapping for help. Languages supported at the time of writing this article: English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Portuguese, Spanish.

Read With Diya: Diya can read the entire sentence, highlighting each word as it’s read so that the child can follow along.

Proactive Feedback: The app tracks the progress on the sentence and proactively offers support if it detects that the child is struggling.

Choose from a large variety of engaging stories: The app comes preloaded with a large collection of engaging & carefully selected stories, with new stories added over time. All the reading material on the app is completely free!

Enjoy as they learn: Children can also play interesting word games and earn in-app awards, helping reading become both fun and a daily habit.

Personalised for each child: Multiple children can use the same app, and track their progress separately. Over time the difficulty level of recommended stories adjusts to their reading skills.

Read without distractions (and without data too): The app works even when completely offline, and shows no ads, so your children can just focus on reading.

What kind of permission does the app ask for and why? And does Google store that data?

“Given the nature of the app, it will require necessary permissions for mic and speakerphone. We don’t store any of the voice data anywhere and are not using voice sample of kids to make our product better.” – Google
