{"id":8276,"date":"2020-04-08T05:57:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T05:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phambano.org.za\/uncategorized\/how-to-report-fake-news-on-facebook-instagram-whatsapp-and-twitter\/"},"modified":"2020-04-08T05:57:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T05:57:53","slug":"how-to-report-fake-news-on-facebook-instagram-whatsapp-and-twitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phambano.org.za\/staging\/how-to-report-fake-news-on-facebook-instagram-whatsapp-and-twitter\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Report Fake News On Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fake News online is\u00a0a term used to refer to fabricated\u00a0and misleading\u00a0news.\u202f Basically \u2013 it is a lie someone creates online to distract people from the real news and truth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to fake news, this is what is important to remember: <em>the information\u202fis false, but it seems true<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few things to consider when trying to identify whether a post or article online is fake news:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dive deeper:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Where is the source of the\u00a0story\u00a0<\/li><li>Do you recognise the website and is the website\u00a0legit\u00a0<\/li><li>Research the author \u2013 are they known to spread misinformation, disinformation or fake news\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Read the entire article\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A\u00a0shocking headline which would be created to grab your attention<\/li><li>Often in fake news the headline is all in CAPS and includes a bunch of exclamation marks and warning calls to action\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who else is reporting this news?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If it\u2019s only one source, and contradictory to reputable sources, then probably fake.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Check the facts<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are the dates correct?\u00a0 Is this an old article published years back on a different subject and altered?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fake or opinion?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We\u00a0have to\u00a0be careful when labelling something as \u201cFake News\u201d as it could be\u00a0someones\u00a0opinion that we just don\u2019t agree with.\u00a0 That does not make it fake.\u00a0Ask yourself too whether you are basing your judgement on your own bias?\u00a0 Not agreeing with something, doesn\u2019t make it fake either.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is it a joke?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>So many jokes going around the Covid19 virus\u00a0at the moment.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t make it fake news either.\u00a0 (EG \u2013 You will not all have weight issues after COVID19!)\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use a\u00a0Fact checking site<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Snopes:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">snopes.com\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>PolitiFact:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">politifact.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>Fact Check:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">factcheck.org\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>BBC Reality Check:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/topics\/267ada11-b730-4344-b404-63067c032c65\/reality-check\" target=\"_blank\">bbc.com\/news\/reality-check<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>Channel 4 Fact Check:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/factcheck\" target=\"_blank\">channel4.com\/news\/factcheck<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>Reverse image search from Google:\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/1325808?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">google.com\/reverse-image-search<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to report Fake News on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Facebook &#8211; Creating a safe space for users to communicate with one another is a priority. However, just like regular SMS or phone calls, it&#8217;s possible for other WhatsApp users who have your phone number to contact you.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spam and hoax messages may or may not come from one of your contacts. These types of messages spread false information and are designed to deceive you and prompt you to act in a certain way. If a message looks suspicious or sounds too good to be true,&nbsp;DON\u2019T&nbsp;tap on it, share it or forward it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Twitter\u00a0&#8211; source Twitter<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Report violations<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can report directly from an individual Tweet, List, or profile for certain violations,&nbsp;including:&nbsp;spam, abusive or harmful content, inappropriate ads, self-harm and impersonation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How to report an individual message or conversation&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tap the Direct Message conversation and find the message you\u2019d like to report.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Tap and hold the message. Select\u202f<strong>Report message<\/strong>\u202ffrom the pop-up menu.
