Technology\u00a0is\u00a0used by perpetrators to harass and abuse victims\u00a0more and more.\u00a0But used\u00a0smartly, the\u00a0same technology can be used to protect victims and empower survivors of GBV!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We (<strong>#Tech2EndGBV<\/strong>) looks at the ways in which\u00a0one can use tech tools and guidelines to protect\u00a0ourselves and victims\u00a0and hopefully\u00a0by sharing resources and knowledge, we will help to eradicate online abuse. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect\u00a0that you are being monitored\u00a0without your consent\u00a0or\u00a0someone seems to know a lot about your whereabouts and online activities, your intuition\u00a0that you are being watched or\u00a0stalked\u00a0online is probably correct.\u00a0Here\u2019s what you can do you can do to keep your perpetrator at bay:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Secure your devices\u00a0by installing\u00a0anti-malware software.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Change usernames and passwords for all of your\u00a0online accounts. Try to create non-detectable\u00a0passwords\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0not too\u00a0easy for\u00a0people who have done some \u201cresearch\u201d on you\u00a0to guess.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Look at\u00a0your\u00a0cellphone\u00a0settings. These days it is very easy to link devices. Make sure that your Bluetooth is only connected to devices that you know (e.g. Smart Watch), and if\u00a0possible,\u00a0keep it switched off\u00a0until you need it and that goes for\u00a0your\u00a0location\u00a0too.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you suspect that someone might be accessing you phone without your\u00a0consent,\u00a0then it would be best for you to get a new\u00a0device.\u00a0Remember not\u00a0to\u00a0use\u00a0your old email address to set up your\u00a0new phone as this might\u00a0give\u00a0the perpetrator access to it.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be discreet about your personal information. Instead of making card payments rather pay cash. Paying with your credit card might make things easy for the perpetrator to track your\u00a0whereabouts. If possible, avoid storing your card information on your devices.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check your home for hidden cameras or get a trusted\u00a0professional to do so.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Empowering SMS Services: The reality of our country is that majority of the population is scattered in disadvantaged areas and rural areas where a smartphone and internet service are often difficult to use which is why having SMS services that will help educate women on how to stay safe is <strong>essential<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Education: The software development and tech industry are still seen as a very difficult industry for women across the global to succeed in. However, over the years we have seen a strong stance of both women and young girls challenging these stereotypes.\u00a0\u201cGirls Who Code\u201d\u00a0is a perfect example of an\u00a0organisation\u00a0that advocates\u00a0about, educates\u00a0and\u00a0raises\u00a0awareness to people about the importance of giving equal opportunities for young girls and provides avenues for that education.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to remember that, technology cannot end gender-based violence &#8211; it is up to us as\u00a0a society and more importantly, the perpetrators to change their ways.
