It can be distributed via social media,\ntext messages, emails or even uploaded onto pornographic websites. The\nintention is usually to humiliate someone, or gain financial benefit from\nintimate multimedia sent by an ex or a former partner \u2013 thus the term \u201crevenge\nporn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you know that you can now be jailed for this in South Africa?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new laws take these offences extremely\nseriously. This is a turning point in South Africa\u2019s modern history, and those\nwho actively try to denigrate someone by making their private life public could\nland themselves in a lot of trouble. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what they can now be jailed for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Knowingly\ndistributing private sexual photographs or films without the prior consent of\nany individual featured.<\/li><li>Sharing\nthese types of photos publicly with the intention to cause harm or distress.<\/li><li>Uploading\nprivate sexual photographs where the person can be clearly identified, or is\nnamed in any accompanying text.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Possible jail sentences and fines<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re found guilty of contravening this amended bill you could find yourself with a two year jail sentence and a fine of up to R150\u00a0000. However, if you post revenge porn which identifies the victim, both the prison time (four years) and the financial penalty (R300 000) double-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to remember that the digital world is not separate \u2013 it is the real world where people are able to express opinions and have social existence.\u00a0 We need to treat online abuse as real as it is an extension of abusive behaviours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women are overwhelmingly the victims of revenge porn<\/strong> and increasingly face the threat of vicious, crowd-sourced attacks on their private lives which harms their reputation and jeopardizes their physical safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be careful of the content you send<\/strong>.\u00a0Once\u00a0someone has a photo or video of you, it is very hard and mostly impossible to control what happens to it.\u00a0\u00a0 Even if you\u2019re in a serious relationship, think very carefully before you share any sexual images \u2013 whether its online or in a text. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Turn off your webcam when you\u2019re not using it<\/strong>, check your privacy settings on your social media accounts regularly, and if you are aware that you\u2019re a victim of revenge porn, make a record of what you can see and what has been brought to your attention by screenshots of where it is shared, prints and backup of messages so that you have the trail of posts if you need it later on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report bad content<\/strong> to the website or social media platform as they all have strict guidelines on how users can get intimate content removed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your biggest fear is always that the people closest to you will see the posts. <strong>Telling them first will soften the blow<\/strong>.\u00a0Don\u2019t stay silent \u2013 go to someone you trust and ask for help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For victims of revenge porn, fight back<\/strong>!\u00a0 Speak out!
