The Hermanus Varsity (HVT) is a bold, unique, initiative
\nto bring higher education to an underserved coastal region in
\nSouth Africa, known as the Overstrand, in the Western Cape
\nProvince. Each year many individuals here qualify for access to
\nsome form of higher education; either diploma or certificate or
\ndegree courses. Most, however, cannot afford higher education,
\nthe cost of which involves traveling outside the region, finding
\naccommodation, and covering living expenses.<\/p>\n
To enable students to \u2018live and learn locally,\u2019 the
\nHermanus Varsity\u2019s contracts with South African universities to
\noffer selected accredited programmes and courses to
\nhelp graduates find employment in the region. But the Varsity
\ngoes beyond conventional distance education. What makes us
\nunique is our tutorial system. Tutors are drawn from
\nprofessionals who work or retire here, attracted to the region\u2019s
\nnatural beauty of mountains and sea. Most of them will work in
\na voluntary capacity.<\/p>\n
