Umsobomvu woman development was initiated by a group of 15 women in 2004. The reason why they started the project was to improve the social and socio economic standard of the unemployed women, youth and people with disabilities, children and people who are living with HIV/AIDS. They estimated that 80% of the population depends on social grants. They therefore started the initiative by contributing R100.00 per person. From there they started to seek for assistance from reasonable funders who can assist them in this regard, hence they started to write letters to business people asking for assistance and the response was positive. Business people started to donate with groceries and second hand clothes.
