Retina South Africa is the only patient-led group in the country that advocates for and supports people with retinal diseases causing vision loss and blindness. We are deeply committed to improving the lives of those facing these challenges by providing vital resources, such as education, training, counselling, and, most importantly, opportunities to thrive-especially through sport.

Founded in 1980 as the Retinitis Pigmentosa Society, Retina SA was created by a group of courageous patients who wanted to find a cure for inherited retinal diseases. When these individuals discovered that their children also had these diseases, they joined forces to offer each other support. Together, they sought not only a cure but a future in which people with retinal diseases would live full, active lives. This mission continues to drive Retina SA today, and through our Para Sport Development Program, we empower people with low vision to engage in various sporting disciplines, building confidence and creating strong, supportive communities.

Our approach to advocacy goes beyond simply supporting people through their vision loss. We work tirelessly to ensure everyone with retinal diseases in SA has access to the best treatments available while also providing avenues for growth through participation in sport. We aim to break barriers, foster inclusion, and help our members feel empowered to actively participate in communities-proving that vision impairment doesn’t define a person’s potential.
